Q. In 1990, Arkansas jumped from the Southwest Conference to the SEC. That same year the ACC expanded and the Pac-10 took a look at adding Texas and Texas A&M. How close did the Texas schools come to joining the Pac-10?

A. It's been a long time and memories do tricks to you but Texas was in my opinion based on communications, Texas was very interested and it thought initially might be able to come alone. Then about the time things were really getting serious it was made clear to us by Texas-Austin that it couldn't get clear of A&M. We invited A&M but before we got a clear signal from A&M, Ann Richards who was then the governor said Baylor's my alma mater and they're going wherever Texas and Texas A&M go and then in a less clear message, but still pretty well defined, we were told the legislators who control the oil money that goes to the Texas universities was controlled either by alumni of or representatives of the area of Texas Tech and now there was a group of four and we were not interested in going from 10 to 14 so we said 'thank you anyway.' But Texas alone was very favorably inclined to consider our offer.

Interesting..... the annual Texas - USC showdown would be so epic, but then we may lose Texas - OU showdowns. I'd still take OU cuz I will always hate their guts, and the games will always be special to me.

It's getting late, but it has been a very eventful day. I should I'd post in my blog again.

I shall comment on two things tonight: the passing of Michael Jackson, and the Rockets' selections in the NBA draft

as a 25-year-old, I WISH I could say that I grew up listening to Michael, but I didn't. I knew about Michael, but I only read about him in newspapers and the occasional TV news coverage on his success when I was a kid. I didn't have a stereo, a computer, and the Internet didn't exist yet. Despite never hearing any of his songs, I knew about him and respected what he did. It wasn't until when I moved to US at the age of 15 did I start getting exposed to his music. One by one: Thriller, Billie Jean, Smooth Criminal, You Are Not Alone..... I liked his singles. I realized that he revolutionized music at the time and created what we know as Pop today. My respect for him grew larger and larger.

However, this was the early 21st century, when Michael became more and more discombobulated (I looked "crazy" up in the thesaurus) and was often the butt of jokes, the target of ridicule, and his success became a thing of the past. He turned to drugs, became more reclusive, and must've been suffering mentally and physically. While I found his appearance weird and freaky, my images of him remained as the King of Pop in 80s and early 90s. I knew that he will never be the same Michael as when he was at his peak, maybe he really was a child molestor, maybe he really was endangering his baby, but in my mind it doesn't taint his legacy in music. To me, they were not the same person.

And that's why, even though I haven't listened to most of his great songs yet, tonight I pay tribute to one of the greatest innovators and musicians in history. Rest in peace, Michael Jackson.

Now I turn to the Rockets' draft picks in the 2009 NBA Draft. While Rockets had already traded away all of their draft picks this year, and this draft having the weakest depth of talent in years, GM Daryl Morey still seeked to buy his way into this draft. Daryl has displayed a knack of finding diamonds in the rough, finding talents for cheap and almost always find a way to improve the Rockets' overall talent level and depth. This year, he did not disappoint. The Rockets managed to buy not 1, not 2, but THREE second round draft picks. They were #32 Jermaine Taylor, #34 Sergio Llull, and #44 Chase Budinger, all for $6 million and our second-round draft pick next year.

This is where the genius comes in: we don't really NEED all these players. Sergio, for example, will be stashed away in Spain for more years. Chase Budinger is a lanky SF with a shooting touch, and Jermaine Taylor is a talented scorer at the 2-guard position. Rockets were covered last season at both of these position. What the Rockets gained this year, however, is MORE DEPTH. There is always a need for a sharp shooter on the bench, and JT has an excellent chance to compete for a roster spot with Von Wafer. If Wafer doesn't sign with the Rockets, JT will be competing with James White for the back-up SG spot. The added depth also allows the Rockets to add trading chips to trade for other players. The worst case scenario, the players don't pan out after work outs, practices, and summer league play, and they are again stashed away in NBDL waiting for their chase to be called up again. This draft shows that Daryl Morey and owner Lex Alexander again turned nothing into three important pieces for the immediate and further future.

While I wanted the Rockets to draft other players, such as Sam Young and Patrick Mills, both of whom were drafted after the Rockets' picks, I still trust Morey and his team of scouts in picking up the best talents that fit the Rockets team. To that, I say: Kudos Morey.

So I know I haven't updated this blog in a while. Twitter/Facebook has got me. I'll try to be more proactive at updating this thing, since I still have to resharpen my writing skills. Too much shorthand/internet-speak has diminished however weak my English skill already was.

Anyways, I've heard/read a lot of complaints about Houston weather. While I call Houston "home", I've only really lived in Houston for 4 years out of my life. During those 4 years and any subsequent summers, I already know how hot Houston can really be. I've included a picture above comparing the weather in Houston to the weather at where I live right now.

Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen reviews

As some of you already know, I won a Facebook contest to get a free ticket to Transformers 2 private screening tonight, a full 6 days before it is released in the US. We were the first ones to see it in the country.

So the planning was poor and no identities were checked. They just gave everyone standing in the line a ticket. So yeah I could've brought a few of my friends along....... anyways, here's my brief review without spoilers:

The good: great fight scenes, lots of fight scenes, lots of explosions, lots of robot actions, lovable Decepticons, Optimus Prime kicking butt, Up-to-date humor, Megan Fox, Isabel Lucas

The bad: too long so some parts of plot is dragged on. Didn't like the sappy stuff between Shia and Megan. Not enough Ratchet, Ironhide, etc.

The verdict: Better than the first one, must see if you like explosions , and I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. Was very heart-pounding and entertaining.

I just tried to log into Friendster to no avail, so I went into my hotmail history to try to check if I had any emails from Friendster. Well, no email, but that opened up a whole pandora box and got me reading the archives back in 2002, when I was 19.

The more I read my past emails, I become more and more embarassed. How do I used to be so.....emo? and so immature? Wow.

That's the exact reason to this date I cannot read the archives of my first web journal. It would both be nostalgic and highly embarassing.

Most of you may not know this, but I'm kind of a compulsive buyer. I normally would always try to save money, but if I deem something that's worth having, I normally don't take more than an hour before I make the purchase. I bought my laptop this way: from the moment I realized that I want a new laptop, to making the decision to buy a laptop, to putting the order down, it took maybe about a day. A $950 laptop to me is a major purchase. However, I can always justify my purchases, so I don't think it's really that big of a problem. It does not help in the saving-money department.

In 2009 alone, I've spent about $700 in buying a wii, wii games, and accessories. I just bought a $200 GPS unit for the upcoming March trip around Cali. I can't even disclose how much I've already spent on V-day gift and birthday gift on Chelsea. I don't really regret any of my purchases, but it just goes to show me that the moment I have money, I'd like to spend it on things that may or may not be useful. I'd also like to thank my lucky stars that I'm still behind the protective shell of academics during this economic downturn.

This morning was the first time I used the said GPS unit. Feeling confident and adventurous, I took a new route to go to my lab. I figured itis a shorter route (though with way more traffic), but I've never tried it before. Well, the following exert probably illustrate my story the best:

Well, it's been a while since I last typed something meaningful, circa 2002-2007

I just don't see blogging as a way to express my feelings anymore. Maybe I grew out of it. Maybe I like my life. Maybe I like who I am. Maybe I have nothing to write about because there is really nothing exciting about what I face everyday anymore.

Oh sure, I just came back from the annual trip to Chicago. This year's conference has sure gone by fast. I remember being really excited my first year because I had no responsibilities, and I was going around looking at all the cool stuff. The second year, I was tied to a booth that I wasn't really interested in, and I still had fun by walking around the exhibits and I stayed in Chicago for an extra weekend to really enjoy the city.

This year, I had my own project that was REALLY disappointing to my own standard. Seriously, my booth sucked. I worked a lot on another project that received good reviews as powerpoint presentation, but my own computer exhibit suffered because of my indifference toward it and just a general lack of attention toward it until a month before the conference. Even so, I received encouraging words about the importance of my project and that how much it would help physicians and patients. Then I also had disrespectful remarks about how it didn't work. Maybe I deserved it, but that was really unprofessional.

Anyway, this RSNA just seemed to go very fast and just uneventful. I can honestly tell you what I did every single day, which was to stay at my booth completing the last assignment of this semester. It was a success for our lab, but I really thought that I can do better than this.

I really should pick up the slack now.

California driver's license

Today, I visited the California DMV for the very first time to get my license. After a cop stopped me for a speeding ticket, he warned me about how they would impound my car if I don't get one. So there, that's a convincing motivation.

So a couple things are different about Texas DMV and California DMV: you can set up appointments online in Cali. That was pretty sweet, no waiting in line for me, I'm a busy Asian. So everything went smoothly, my number was called barely after I sat down.

The other thing is that there was a written test, not a computer one I took when I was 18 in Texas. Seriously, if that technology was available back in 2001, it should be even more common in 2008. Bunch of people standing in booths hunched over with pencils to mark in little squares seemed so 20th century.

Anyways, the passing grade is 6 errors or fewer and I got 5 wrong, meaning that I passed, but barely. Pretty good for a guy who didn't study.

Well, now I just gotta wait for two weeks for them to mail me the card. Bitches punched a hole in my Texas license so it is void now. Damn them.

Updating that lab website

I've decided to put my research on hold to do something else. I had felt like my day has become routine and wanted to try something new.

So I picked up my lab duty as the webmaster and going to work on redesigning the website.

I've made a couple of progresses at my local copy of the site (which is different from the actual site, which is located on the webserver that I cannot directly edit from my own computer). Hopefully when the redesign is completed, I can upload it to the webserver without much trouble.

Gotta brush my CSS and design skills... :-P

By the way, the moment Dark Knight comes out on Blu-Ray will be the moment I buy that blu-Ray player I've always wanted. Sweetness.

As soon as I'm paid for January (finally), I find myself short on money again. My auto-insurance bill is due at the end of this month, and it's worth more than half of my paycheck. The rest of the money goes into the bottomless pit that is my credit card bill. I want to open a high-yield savings account, but I can never seem to accumulate a good amount of money for me to start.

I'm still waiting for the RSNA reimbursement, scheduled to arrive sometime next week. Yipee.

In other news, writer's strike may be ending soon. Which means that the Office and Scrubs may be soon back on the air. :)

On another note, Mitt Romney has dropped out of the race, making McCain a clear winner of the Republican ticket.

I like McCain, I wouldn't mind him winning the presidential race. He's a straight- shooter with moderate views. Only if he were a Democrat, he would've been perfect for a candidate, at least in my opinion.

Alas, we disagree on the war, the economy, and issues on stemcell research.

If this were 4 years ago, and I heard that the Suns are trading Shawn Marion for Shaq, I would've been like "wow that's a steal for the Suns! They are going to win the championship for sure!"

Now is not the case.

I'm not a Suns fan. I'm a Rockets fan through and through. But the basketball fan in me would not let me tolerate the worst trade by the Suns organization. As of now, the Suns are number 1 in the West Conference, still the better conference of the two. You have it going. Every single team fears your high-soring offense. You can pretty much run over any team on any given night. Now you trade away your second-best player for a center that is obviously WAY past his prime.

The league without a good Suns team is definitely missing. Phoenix, welcome to mediocrity.

Not a good day for the NBA. Unless you are a Heats fan.

Well, I suppose it's about time I migrate away from Xanga to start a new blog. Since I'm a fan of simple layouts, Blogger seems like the best choice around. So, I'm trying this new thing out.

I voted for the first time today, decided to play my part in the contested Democratic Primary. I have no idea who's going to win California, so it'll be exciting. However, the old ladies at the voting booth gave me a hard time because:

1. It's my first time voting, so really I have little clue of what I'm doing
2. I still have my Texas Driver's license and did not have proof that I live at my current address
3. I didn't bring my voter's booklet (nothing on it ever told me to bring the thing)

Despite that, I was able to cast a provisional vote, meaning that they'll check my eligibility before counting my vote. The whole punching down the marker thing was fun though.

The Superbowl this year has to be the best Superbowl I've seen in recent memory. Even the commercials are above par. I watched the game in this mindset: if the Patriots win, I witness history. If the Giants win, I witness one of the greatest upsets of all time. Truth to be told, I'm really glad the Giants won, because I'm tired of the collective fellatio Pats have received from every media outlet over the last two weeks.

USC still owes me my January's pay plus reimbursements of my November trip to Chicago. While I'm tired of USC's ineptitude at paying students on time, the more I think about it the more I get angry and frustrated. Who's gonna pay for my auto-insurance? Damn you Trojans.

Chinese new year is a couple days away, and this will be the first time I won't receive a red envelope full of money. I wish I were back in Houston with my family (for the money :) ) but alas, I'm 24 and probably too old to receive money nowadays.

On another note, if I really managed my finances well last fall, I probably would be a little better off right now. Oh well.
